blog by email – login name with character

    I’m trying to set up the blog by email function on the current version of WordPress, but it keeps changing the username on me. I input foo+xrlq.com, as required by Bluehost, and WordPress truncates the login name to simply foo, which doesn’t work. Is there a workaround for this bug (or worse, bug-like “feature”)?

    I would be trying foo@xlrq.com – for most webhosts I have ever worked with, emails are setup to take either.

    I tried that, too, but it also didn’t work. I then tried setting up an account on a different server where I could log in simply as foo. It still won’t change the setting to what I input. Now I’m having the same problem for the email address under General Settings – I keep changing it to xrlq@xrlq.com and it keeps changing it back to Xrlq, again in green.

    so you’re saying these changes are not working in WP on the Settings | Writing screen where you set up the Post By Email thing?

    I just set up a new e-addy to test this – I see nothing shown in green. I have sent a message – it has yet to show up in my blog – not sure how often WP checks for mail.

    EDIT: it worked for me – had to manually force WP to grab the email which it stuck in a “Pending Review” category. I’m turning this off now, lol.

    Is it possible that one of your plugins is screwing this up?

    I suppose it’s possible, but the only plugins I’m running are Akismet 2.1.8 and WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.2.2. Are there any known compatibility problems with these two (vs. WordPress 2.61)?

    I just upgraded to the newest version. Now it accepts the settings, and nothing appears in green, but it still doesn’t seem to be checking the email account in question or posting the stuff sent to it. Is there an on/off switch somewhere in there that I’m missing?

    It works better with email@domain.com instead of email+domain.com. Bluehost allows both the + and the @ symbols, but you can use the @ symbol.

    As a tip, don’t use auto-upgrade plugins. Sooner or later they’ll break your site.

    I’ve used blog by email with Bluehost and it works really well! Try following the codex instructions and make sure you have everything set right: http://codex.wordpress.org/Blog_by_Email
