    Hi,

I am trying to install WordPress. I have uploaded the files to my web server through Filezilla. Since I want WordPress to be uploaded in a subdirectory, I have created a subdirectoy called ‘columns’. All the WordPress files are now in this folder, which means I should be able to continue the installation (http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Detailed_Instructions
step 5: run the install script) by typing the URL: http://dorevanduivenbode.nl/columns/wp-admin/install.php
    However, I get a 404 notification.

The installation guide tells me that I will also need to create the index.html (before I run the installation script). Since I have not done this, I think this might be the problem. How do I create an index.html? And if not, might there be another problem with uploading WordPress in a subfolder?

    Thanks in advance!

    Dore

  • The guide asks me to create a file index.html and redirect from there.

    What guide?

    Hi Esmi,

I have edited the question. We meant the installation guide on the WordPress website.
The Famous Five Minutes Installtion Guide, which takes us more than 48 hours now…

The installation guide does not say anything about creating an index.html file…

You are right, sorry, this link says something about it: http://www.thesitewizard.com/gettingstarted/wordpress1.shtml

In the WordPress guide they say nothing abut this problem, so I searched for help somewhere else since we don’t know how to solve it and run the installation script.

So, if the index.html is not the problem: how do I run the installation script (with WordPress in a subfolder)? I have entered the correct URL.

Yes, we are using that one as well and will continue using that one. Unfortunately, the problem remains that we get a 404 notification even though we have uploaded the WordPress files and entered the correct URL. We have not registered ourselves on forehand (is that maybe the problem?).

All Steps of the wordpress installation guide seem to have worked except for the last one: entering http://dorevanduivenbode.nl/columns/wp-admin/install.php. What to do?

We have not registered ourselves on forehand (is that maybe the problem?).

No. You do not have to register anywhere to install WordPress.

I cannot find any sign of WordPress anywhere on your site. I can only assume you have uploaded the files to the wrong place on your hosting account.

The problem had multiple angles (wrong hostname, wrong password and wrong location from where we uploaded the files). However, after three days of struggling, it now seems to work!

    Thank you for your time.
