I've only ever updated via the automatic upgrade with wordpress and to be honest i don't know how to back my db files.
So thinking nothing of it, I updated my site only to lose the whole thing including the admin section (so i can't get in it). My site is http://www.letsbebrief.co.uk/blog
Not sure what's the best thing to do, should i just start from scratch and upload a new site (losing my old content) or is there something i can do to rectify this mess?

Back up now, do not give up yet :-)
Going back to your upgrade, did you auto-upgrade from admin dashboard? If so, try to re-upload WP files and folders via FTP or cpanel. There might just be some missing files in the first process.
