  • I’m making some error here, because a testsite worked ok.

I uploaded all the files from the jan 7th version of the nightlies, except of the wp-config.php. Tried running wp-admin/upgrade.php and wp-login, but in both cases blank screens with no errorwarning.
Cleared my database, installed wp from scratch (which let’s me login again), imported my database, then can’t login or upgrade anymore. Frankly nothing happens, even the index.php of my weblog remains blank.

What am I doing wrong here?

  • No idea – maybe an old version of .htaccess (possibly invisible, depending on your settings) in your root dir? Or an error from the ascii/binary detection of your FTP client when uploading?

I’m not using .htaccess (checked to be sure), and uploaded everything again through another fpt-client. Doesn’t work. But I think the uploading went OK because I can run the install.php, but nothing else… 🙁

Edit: Just uploaded all the files from the latest nightly (build 1-16-2005), but that didn’t help either.

Edit part 2: Fresh installation works fine! Everything in the wright database. But when I import my ‘old’ database (only a few weeks old)…

I thought it might have something to do with upgrading from 1,2 directly to 1.5, so I upgraded first to 1.2.2 which went OK! But from 1.2.2 to 1.5 still only blank screens when I want to upgrade or login.

Are you following the official upgrade procedures?

Yes, I think I did all of this. Never used .htaccess, deleted all the files and directories first before uploading the new ones. Like I said, the procedure is going fine with the upgrade from 1.2 to 1.2.2. That’s the version I now reinstalled. But strangely enough I dó have a betaversion running on 1.5 (http://www.spoenk.nl/weblog-beta/) which I created without upgrade. So in the end I wanted to do that with official site as well but without success until now. I could switch both directories, renaming them, but I want to know what’s wrong here.

I ran into this same problem. I went ahead and uploaded wp-content directory, refreshed and viola, insta-blog.

    Im getting the same. grrr…….

What exactly did you do eragle? A complete new install? No upgrading? Just importing your database? Because I think that’s impossible going from 1.2.2 to 1.5.

You can’t simply use a 1.2.2 database with a 1.5 beta. You must run the upgrade script.

I’ll try it one more time this evening, but that’s where things go wrong for me and I get those blank screens.

Is there a particular order I must follow? Let’s say I make a complete new install with 1.5. Do I first install, then import database and then upgrade? Or is it no-install (just the files), import database en then upgrade?

No I upgraded alright, but I uploaded a new copy of wp-content and that did the trick. For some reason it wasn’t seeing the default theme.

I am having a similar blank screen problem, but it’s sporadic. There are times when my site simply disappears. I have checked out possible problems with my host but its not there (and, indeed, there were no such events prior to WP 1.5, it was fine with Pivot and with WP 1.22). I can only conclude that it’s something to do with the WP beta (im on the nightly from the 16th, but plan to u/g that asap in case theres a fix, even by osmosis as it were).

I cannot figure it out for the life of me, and as soon as I decide to get someone to take a look, the site becomes visible again…its quite mysterious. I am confuzzled.

    Hello

When I tried to upgrade one blog it worked fine. But it just wouldn’t work for another one on the same server with the same apache + mysql + php … each time the screen kind of froze, nothing happened, if I used a proxy is said zero length page, Lynx said connection interupted… it didn’t always look the same, depending what browser I used. But in all cases nothing happened to the DB.

I looked at and debugged the code and found out where it got stuck. What happened is that at one place it has to load all the posts in memory and if the DB is too big, there isn’t enough mem available! So I check my php.ini file, there was none. Then I installed the “recommended” one, increased the mem from the default 8M to 16M and restarted Apache. That solved the problem!

I wonder if in the case of a very big DB, a command prompt upgrade script wouldn’t be better!
