• Dear all,

Today I saw the weirdest thing happen to my site. First all worked ok, except for the thumbnails (featured images) at the bottom of the page. Then I refreshed and it still didn’t work. I refreshed a couple of times again and suddenly I just got a blank page with the word “error” at the top left in Times font.

I couldn’t acces the login page either. So I manually deactivated Better WP Security via FTP and then my site worked again. What could be causing this weird “error”?

My guess is your IP has been temporary blocked your the plugin. It may happen if you’re try to access a file that isn’t exist too frequently. It may be not your fault, but the plugin your website use.

This is very possible, which also happen on my site, the plugin is looking for a file on wp-content directory, but unfortunately the location has been changed on Better WP Security settings.

Why that happened? Some plugin authors write the plugin to read files directly on “wp-content”. It is okay, but in some cases the wordpress content directory may change to other name.

So my guess is, you’ve been temporary blocked by Better WP Security which probably caused by other plugin that fail to read file from correct ‘content’ directory.

Be warned, any temporary blocked IP will be unblock after certain period of time. But repeated issue will cause the IP to be permanent banned from your website.

Ok thanks, so it’s perfectly possible this plugin blocked my IP?
If I add my IP, all should work fine… I’ll try and see what is causing this then.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Hello.

I have some typing mistakes on my previous post:

    Wrong:
… your IP has been temporary blocked your the plugin.
    Correct:
… your IP has been temporary blocked by the plugin.

    Wrong:
which also happen on my site, the plugin is looking for a file on wp-content directory,
    Correct:
which also happen on my site, another plugin is looking for a file on wp-content directory,

This IP blocking if looking for missing files feature can be configured on Better WP Security on section: Intrusion Detection. Please pay attention on the red colored text there. Here I make a copy:

Warning! If your site has a lot of missing files causing 404 errors using this feature can ban your own computer from your site. I would highly advice whitelisting your IP address below if this is the case.

To avoid such blocking happen on yourself, you should provided the IP of your webhost and the IP of the computer on the 404 White List. Unfortunately most home users won’t have a fix IP address.

To know why 404 errors generated, you can examine it on View Log section. Some plugins on my site are not properly write to access ‘wp-content’, I know it from the log.

    Good luck.
