I have WP 1.5 installed and after some testing I realized that it was marking *all* comments as spam. I narrowed it down to the "Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies" feature. I don't know if it's just misconfigured or what, but I know I'm not using an insecure proxy, and neither are two other people that I had test it. Can anyone else verify this behavior or suggest a possible cause? Thanks.

Posted 7 years ago #I just noticed this behavior as well. I only had a few simple words in my blacklist with the 'Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies' checkbox checked and every comment was nuked. Even comments that I tried to enter.

This is just an implementation defect. I haven't yet looked in the code, but will do soon.
It nuked over 100 comments from my users. However I recovered them from the database.
For now I have disabled that option. Otherwise blackhole works.

Most of us, including WP's lead developer, use that option and have had no problems with it. This is probably an isolated issue. Have you reported it to the bug tracker yet?

Posted 7 years ago #I have the same issue as stated above. I had a 1.2 install, which I upgraded to 1.5.
Unless I turn off the Blacklist, all comments are marked as spam/nuked.
The code is doing some kind of check, as there is a discernable delay (I assume whilst a check is being performed) between submitting the comment and the page refreshing. When the blacklist is turned off the page refresh is much quicker.
I don't feel like I'm an isolated incident ;-)
My host machine isn't running BIND or a proxy. It does have reverse DNS set up though (it's a secured mail server - no relay there).

Posted 7 years ago #I'm having the same problem. If the checkbox is ticked and there is anything in the Comment Blacklist, all comments get marked as spam. I've tested with a long list and a single word without whitespace.
If I uncheck the box then the Comment Blacklist works as advertised.
But I'd rather shut out open and insecure proxies as well.

Posted 6 years ago #What qualifies a potential commenter as having an "open and insecure proxy?" Do any normal, innocent commenters get nuked by this simply because of their ISP or other 'net configuration? I don't want to nuke the wrong people by accident, even occasionally.

WordPress checks a real-time backlist (specifically: http://opm.blitzed.org/ ) to see if the commentator's IP appears listed as an open or insecure proxy. Open and insecure proxy servers are sometimes used by spammers, since that will prevent them from being tracked down effectively. Genuine commenters will rarely, if ever, use an open or insecure proxy to browse your blog. Selecting "Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies" will automatically delete comments the arrive via these open or insecure proxies.
Comments that are automatically "deleted" by WordPress are not actually deleted. They are placed in the database with a
[spam]tag (and withheld for upcoming and more "intelligent" anti-spam technologies). To view, permanently delete, and recover any comments with a[spam]tag, all you need to do is use Spam Nuker: http://www.chrisjdavis.org/2005/03/03/mass-delete-15/ This will allow you to keep track of all the comments that WordPress automatically deletes and will allow you to recover any false-positives. -

Posted 6 years ago #I'm a long time wordpress user. Starting just today, I am no longer able to get a comment posted to my site. What is going on?
Not just at work, but at home also. Not only that, but also from a remote desktop connection eight states away. Not even the tech support guy from readysetconnect.com could post a comment.
What's going on here. I dare you to try posting a comment at http://www.ravenscraft.org. It just doesn't work.
The only thing that does work is if I LOGIN as myself, then I can post a comment, but it still takes about a minute and a half.
But if I log out, NOTHING!!!!
Please tell me there is a fix for this!!!
I have tried unchecking the Blaklist option and I'm still not able to post

Cliff, your commenting system appears to be working properly. My comment is currently awaiting moderation. You can find it in your admin interface at Manage/Awaiting Moderation, and you may find more comments there too.

Posted 6 years ago #Yes, now it does seem to be working. Comments were not going to moderation yesterday. Well 1 out of 20 would make it, the rest simply did not show up anywhere. The comments-post.php would simply time out. Today, it is actually refreshing and posting the page with the commment in moderation... HOWEVER... it's taking 20 to 35 seconds to post.
Is there a reason for this to take so long...?

Well, the slowness could be attributed to an active plugin, so try posting a comment after deactivating all of your plugins. If a plugin is not the cause, then the problem is simply the speed of your server.

Posted 6 years ago #But it's never done this before. That's what is so odd. I've gone into the comments php file and put a note above the submit button that says that it may take between 20 to 40 seconds for the comment to post....
Hopefully this will help people get their comments posted to my blog.
