This is an unfortunate side effect of some videos from YouTube and other sources not providing widescreen thumbnails. Widescreen HD videos added to YouTube in the past few years should be okay, so it’s probably older ones that will have black bars.
This is happening on our site as well with widescreen YouTube videos that were created yesterday. I get a square thumbnail with black bars.
Sometimes it takes YouTube extra time to process thumbnails. Can you share a specific example?

The videos appear to be in 480p which is not HD, so YouTube is not generating the higher quality widescreen thumbnails.
I see. Is there anything that can be done about that from the plugin side?
The free version only uses the image provided by the source, but the pro version adds an option to always crop the image to a widescreen aspect ratio.
