Big Problems Trying To Export My Files From WordPress.com to WordPress.org (24 posts)

Okay so I decided to finally move my blog from wp.com to wp.org. I hosted my site with Blue Host and I tried to export the files and kept getting a wordpress error that something happened to their site etc. That was last night I have tried again today and the same thing keeps happening. I have tried just exporting posts and the same thing happens. What am I doing wrong. This whole experience is really making me second guess the move. Thanks.

What are you trying to export from wordpress.com? And what exactly is the error?

I am trying to export my posts from my wp.com blog to import in my new self hosted wp.org blog. I keep getting this error Goshdarnit!

Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.

We’ve just been notified of the problem.

Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.

Okay I think I figured it out I am having to export the posts in stages, I cannot do them all at once. I guess it was just too much content to export at one time. Thanks.

Alright no luck exporting the last 3 months of posts from my wp.com blog and now I was able to import one of the exports into my wp.org blog but when I try to put the bigger files in I get this error. Sorry, there has been an error.
File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.

    The files are not empty.

Okay I think I found why it will not import the files now because it is 16mb but that is one month of posts, the smallest increment I can choose. What do I do???

Can you increase upload_max_filesize in your new servers php.ini? Also, check your dashboard settings for the max file size upload limit.

I have Blue Host and they are not the ones that are limiting the file it is wordpress.org

It says on wordpress.org 10mb is there any way to increase this?

I'm confused as to how WordPress.org is limiting the file size if your new blog is hosted on BlueHost.

    - Your WordPress.com site is carly67.wordpress.com, correct?
    - Have you exported all of the content in one file?
    - When you import into your new blog, is that when you receive the error?

No my new site is http://www.mommyramblings.org but I have not directed it off my old site yet I have tried to export everything but I can not get the last three months off of wordpress.com as I keep getting an error that I thinkk the file size is too big. Also I cannot import on WordPress.org any of my posts from July 2011 on because they are all more than 10mb and it says on the WP importer max file size 10mb

I can't believe I am the only blogger that would have more than 10mb content in one month which is the smallest increment I can export and import based on the dates.

I don't have any experience with WordPress.com blogs, and they have their own support forums located here (yes, WordPress.org and WordPress.com are two completely separate support forums).

As for importing into your BlueHost blog, this may help.

I'll pass your request around to see if I can garner more help.

  17. MommyRamblings - Ask at WordPress.com to see if there's a limit. There isn't one I know of, but most folks here are .org (i.e. self hosted) gurus. I kinda-sorta use my .com blog.

Make sure you specify if you're trying to export from wp.com, save it to your desktop and THEN upload to your self hosted or not.

As for bluehost, they're being stupid. The problem is, YES, your install of WP has a 10 meg limit. They're right there. But they're being daft because the limit is SET by them in the php.ini file for the server.

Wanna know how I know? They have a freakin' document on it: https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/110

(Also if you can do us a solid and not make so many posts in a short time ;) We're volunteers and posting 3 or 4 times in an hour begging for help ... well you're a mommy, it's like that toddler who really wants a cookie when you're on the phone with the gas company ;) )

I am really sorry for all the posts but I am freaking out. I am second guessing my move because I had a great following and many sponsors but I needed to make the move to take on the advertisers that wanted to get on my blog. I never dreamed it would be so difficult to get things together. If there was a way I could make the transfer files smaller it would work no problem. I have gone into Blue Host and when into the Php config and uploaded the master and got it in my public file but do not know what to do from there. I need to get this site up because I am letting everything go and I have to get somewhere. I am ready just to give up because it does not seem I will be able to transfer more than 10mb in the import on WP.org.

  19. If you are still having issues getting an export file *off of wordpress.com* then you need to post about that issue (and only that issue on the wordpress.COM forums.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/

None of us here can help you with wp.com specific issues, sorry.

I have left a comment there about the problem exporting the bigger files but that still does not help me about importing more than 10mb into wordpress.org.

  22. MommyRamblings - Read https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/110

Those are Bluehosts doc on how to increase the import size. Do that, and you should be back up.

esmi I absolutely love you for the file splitter that has allowed me to import my files into wp.org. Now I just cannot export my last three months of blog posts from wp.com and no one even answers my question. I love you!!!

    Hey all,

I know the topic is very old, but maybe this helps someone. I bumped in the same issue when trying to export data. It actually is from a wp.org blog (and not wp.com) and besides trying to increase php_memory_limit or php_max_execution_time that didn't solve the issue, I disabled JetPack plugin and then it worked.

Not sure if this is something that could be disabled on a wp.com account, but it solved my problem.
