Last night through C panel I restored my home directory, something that's never been a problem before. Today when I logged in, in place of my blog was "domain.com/wp-admin/install.php" the famous 5 minute wp installation page. So far have restored last 2 home directory back-ups with no luck. When I go through ftp and check "username@domain.com", all my files seem to be listed there. My host unfortunately backed up this morning when damage was already done. I have a full backup, not up to date, as a last resort.
Last night I also went into public html & somehow double-clicked on admin.php file which was downloaded to my desktop. I thought restoring directory would repair that. Since I no longer have a site I also can't log into wp. Is all lost or does anyone have an encouraging glimmer? Thanks.
do you have a backup of SQL? If yes, then freshly install the wordpress (yes, do not use old files) and once it is ready, restore the database

I have a complete back-up of the entire site. My host says the data base is there. They plan to delete the site and install my back-up. Won't that work? I have no separate copy of mysq. I was in fact investigating the db (trying to figure out what permissions I had) when this happened.
I completely transformed the theme, so that's the info I most want. Site is new with only a few posts. Thanks...
If you only care about the theme, just find your theme folder, download it, and then activate it in a new wordpress install.(Or, if you still have admin/dashboard access to your site, make sure that you re-activate it.)

FTP shows my public html (& theme) was last modified months ago when it didn't even exist, which sounds like a corrupt file or 2 somewhere. The theme still appears okay in my full backup so looks like I'll be able to use that if I have to reinstall. (Can't get in wp at all). But the thought of all that work & time again keeps me hoping my host can reinstall the whole site. Has anyone ever heard of this working successfully or not?

Quick update for those new to the wordpress game. One of the most important things I wanted from a host was 24/7 phone support. So after numerous calls and emails, I'm happy to say my host, Arvixe, was able to restore my site with a full back-up that was newer than mine. It turned out I wasn't exactly sure when my site had blown-up, but since they keep a number of back-ups on hand, they were able to restore the site at about the correct date. And their support people were unfailingly helpful and pleasant--in contrast to lots I've read about on this forum.
My site is so new, the down time wasn't a big factor. But for the future, I'll definitely be paying closer attention to making full back-ups.
