Best way to handle large # of members

    Wondering what is the best way to handle a large number of members. IMHO, WordPress needs some back end rearchitecting done in order to efficiently manage the process since joins all over the place can kill you. Is there any advice on how to manage this so that you can have a manageable number of users?
