Best way to build an image-centric custom homepage? (1 post)

I have a client who wants a website that, on the homepage, is nothing more than a vertical menu that runs down the left half of the page, and a large photo on the right half of the page. The menu options will be images that I will create. On the far right side there will be a menu for social media icons.

When visitors click on an item in the menu, it will take them to an internal page that we have yet to design. (It may be a more "standard" WordPress page layout with a top horizontal menu, etc, or not.)

    Here's a visual mockup:

What is the best way to go about building this site on WordPress? I have experience customizing themes and I'd love to start with a theme or framework and change it to meet my needs, if at all possible. I've looked through a lot of themes and frameworks but it's hard to tell which ones are good for this type of design. Some advice to point me in the right direction would really help me out.

Thanks in advance for your kind help. :)
