• Tried several different plug-ins for custom and default avatars at a new blog I’m installing. This one is the only one that right out of the box, with no confusion, did the few simple thing you want from such a plug-in right: 1) left gravatars intact, 2) easily upload (or get from Media Library) and set a new default avatar, 3) let a user easily upload and set his or her own avatar image, 4) let an admin easily set a user’s avatar. So far, none of the annoying side conflicts – disables gravatar, sets default but conflicts with other plug-ins that allow for custom, or sets custom but screws up default, or gets other signals crossed…

It’s always possible to imagine more elaborate capabilities, but the plug-in gets the job done, and, considering the apparent difficulties others have with this apparently simple task, that gets it five stars. Incidentally, these capabilities should be part of WP core, IMO.
