   Basically, I have a website that is NOT wordpress, and I need to create a new site that is wordpress. However I want to keep the old site live while being able to access and design the new site, then eventually switch over

   What is the best way to do this?

   I have read about subdomains, subdirectories, redirects, etc.

   I am new to wordpress and servers and can't seem to get it to work. Please help.

   Install, configure and populate WordPress in a sub-folder. Then, when you are ready to launch the new site, see Giving WordPress Its Own Directory.
