Ive been using spam karma 2 for a while now, its pretty good, however, its not being updated anymore because the creator stopped supporting it, so im wondering which plugin should i get once SK2 stops working ( because of the constant wordpress upgrades )
I use two --> Akismet and Bad Behaviour. Since I've been using them my spam counts have dropped from more than 100 a day to less than half dozen a month.
Akismet comes packaged with WordPress but I gave you the link anyway if for some strange reason you don't have it.
I think Akismet alone is good enough in many cases. That said, I use Akismet and Spam Karma 2 anyway (still works in WP 2.6) on my most commented site.
Akismet somehow missed something as obvious as "FREENUDETEENGIRL.COM" as a spam comment. Twice. Perhaps it's because it was presented as "_FREENUDETEENGIRL_._COM_.", but that still seems like unreliable detection to me. I'm hoping that given a short period of time this will improve.
That being said, I am also looking for a supplementary plugin to Akismet as a precaution.
How can I use Akismet on self-hosted WordPress? It requires a WordPress.com API key. Makes no sense.
Is there no good comment spam solution for self-hosted WordPress?
modifiedcontent: This is really quite easy, actually.
1. Go to WordPress.com and sign up for an account. No need to get a blog, just an account.
2. When you do this, you get an API key on your Profile page there.
3. Paste it in on your own self-hosted blog.
That's it.
I also highly recommend the Cookies for Comments plugin. I replaced Bad Behavior with it and have not noticed any increase in spam.
