Beginner seeking help - Please (12 posts)

Hi guys. I am very much a beginner with WP, and pretty much a beginner with web dev stuff, so I'm learning as I go.

I understand that in WP, the main page is dynamic and any other pages created are static. If I am mistaken, please correct me. What I would like to do ideally is blog random stuff on the main page. The an other page named "Photo Gallery" create a gallery of photos, but beable to add a new gallery to that page anytime I want to, and have it append to the top (like a new post does). Each gallery would have a different theme. ie. I post a photo gallery today of my last vacation. Tomorrow I post a different photo gallery of my wife. The next day I post a photo gallery of my kids...etc. I would like it to append just like the blog does on the main page. From what I have read, it doesn't appear that this is possible. Is this correct?

If I cannot do this, I have maybe another solution. First let me know if what I want to do is even possible, and if not, I will suggest another way and would love your feedback on that.

Thanks for much for everyone's help!

The easiest way to do that would be with wordpress, gallery2, and the wpg2 plugin for wordpress.

Do you have an example of this? I'd hate to go through all of the work of adding these things and trying to set them up, and then not havingthem work. Thank you.

I've got it setup on my blog, just click my name and it will be the gallery link in the navigation.

I should probably ask also, is this something a beginner can set up and actually make work? I went the wordpress route, because it seemed it was relatively easy to at least set up and start blogging. Now I'm running to problems trying to get my photo gallery working the way I wanted to.

My biggest concern is that I somehow need to get Gallery2 working in conjunction with WP, but even more so making them have the same layout/theme/colors.

That's where the wpg2 plugin comes in, it embeds the gallery2 page inside your current theme. There are also many different simple gallery plugins that might be more what you need.

This setup worked for me because I had already had wordpress and gallery2 setup separately before integrating them.

THanks for the help Jeremy. I set my it up just like you suggested and so far so good. The big question now is there any chance you can help me format my gallery page so that it fits inside the rest of my theme. Right now it appears to be to wide. Thank you.

You need to code your theme so the sidebar can be excluded from the gallery template. Also, make sure you ticked that Gallery2 output page should look like a WordPress page. And don't set it to show more than three rows of album thumbnails/photo thumbnails.

I have it set to look like a wordpress page. It only shows three rows right now.

As a beginner, I couldn't even think about where to begin to exclude the sidebar from the gallery pages. Is that something I really want to do though? I think I'd prefer showing the sidebar, but just moving teh Gallery over to the center instaed of the left, if that is even possible. Thank you for the suggestion SuperSquirrel, but I'd need a bit more help than that. Like where to change the file, and which files need to be changed.

Cam you'll need to install the wordpress embedded theme for gallery2 and then the display will look better.

WP has built-in Galleries now anyway, so you could do what you wanted (basically) without any plugins.

Just have a WP Category called Photos. Boom. When you make a post in that category (the post would be a gallery of pix), it will appear on your Photos category webpage at the top.

If you want to Exclude your Photos posts from the homepage, you can do that too (modify the query on the homepage index.php)
