Beginner Question: Amazon S3? (3 posts)

    Hello all,

I'm new with WordPress, and I'm wondering about hosting options before I make my blog live. Currently I'm with Bluehost and I really like their customer support and features, however it's very slow. around 20+ seconds on a 10mbps connection. I've been considering Amazon S3 (3.2seconds) however I'm a little bit confused as to how it integrates with WordPress.

My question: Would I go with Amazon S3 and they handle all the hosting for my WordPress site, or do I use Bluehost to host the site, and Amazon S3 just for media files?

Thanks in advance for taking the time on this one.

    Hi Graham,

Have you optimized your WordPress website? I'd suggest installing a caching plugin like WP super cache to improve page load speeds. I'm not too familiar with Amazon s3 but at first glance it appears to be a storage service not a web server. There appears to be a number of plugins you can use to store your WordPress media on Amazon s3, but it would still appear you'd need a web server for your WordPress installation. I hope this helps!

    Hello,

OblakSoft is pleased to enable the possibility of running WordPress websites on Amazon S3.
With the Cloud Storage Engine for MySQL (ClouSE) and WP2Cloud WordPress plugin, WordPress can store all its data in Amazon S3 – site content and media files. Amazon S3 has been able to power only static websites; now S3 can power sophisticated dynamic web software such as WordPress.

Using Amazon S3 to store WordPress data has the following benefits:
    • Storage cost scales with usage, no upfront reservation is needed
    • Storage consumption scales up and down with the amount of data stored
    • Storage is extremely reliable and durable by Amazon S3 design
    • Pictures and other media files are served by Amazon S3 directly
    • No database backup and recovery is needed, now that Amazon S3 holds both for the website content stored in WordPress database and website’s media files.

For more information please see the detailed description.

A ready-to-run Amazon Machine Image (AMI) with fully configured WordPress that can run on Amazon S3 is available for free from downloads page.

    Sincerely,
