    Hello,

I need some help learning how to upload images with wordpress.

Basically, the following are the questions I need answered. I am very new to blogging, html, CSS, and wordpress so please explain any answers you can provide in detail. Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

    1) How do I upload images to wordpress? I see there is a function inside of wordpress itself in the "post" area. Is this where I post am image?

    2) Where does the image go in the wordpress directory once I upload it and additionally how do I get the internet link of the image once I upload it so I can use it on my blog?

    3) Is wordpress automatically uploading it to a safe place for me to link to? I don't want to link an image on my blog that could be tracked back to wordpress and then allow my whole thing to be hacked. I know very little about the security of wordpress in this area.

Thank you very much for all the help you can provide.

I have now discovered I can go to my images by typing the url.com/images/filename.jpg

What is the difference between THIS and the URL that wordpress gives me after I upload the image, click the image, get it's properties, and use that URL which is something like wp-content/uploads/2006/04/imagename.jpg as an example?

Which one should I use? Which one is secure so that I won't get hacked?

I am lost as to what is going on. would someone please answer my questions and help me?

Thank you very very much for your assistance.

Newbie alert! (me that is, I'm only days old with wordpress)

What works for me out of the box is something like URL/wp-content/uploads/wx20060429.gif.

    >which should I use?

If both work, it's a matter of preference. Don't know too much about the best structure of wp specifically (yet), but urls (and directories) usually have structure to make things easier for you to find and manage. Because just about anything goes, structure helps. Not now, but later, when you have a couple of thousand images, etc.

    >which one is secure so I don't get hacked"

    - you are not going to get hacked because of your use of image urls. You'll get hacked because server/site setup, userids, passwords, folder rights etc. allows people to get onto your system. Image urls have to be available to users, otherwise it's not going to work.

    > would someone please answer my questions...

I've just been coming up to speed on how wp image upload works myself. I'm sure that if you dig around the archives and the FAQ you will find a ton on information about this.

    sinick,

Thank you very much for your response. I have only found two urls for my posted images so far. The one in the daily uploads and by using the image name at http://www.whateveryourdomian.com/images/imagename.jpg

You see, I am very new to all of this too and I am just wondering which of the two above formats is safe to prevent someone from going in the above and hacking into wordpress or the server it is hosted on (just purchased the hosting too).

Basically, I am cluess about this stuff and terrified I am going to do something really stupid and find out a hacker has gotten in and erased everything after several weeks of working on my blog has gone by.

Does anyone know if visitors can hack your wordpress by using either of the above mentioned URL locations for your images and linking to them? Are those both safe? Are they not safe?

Someone please help me and sinick with this.

    >...which of the two above formats is safe ...

an image url is not going get your server hacked. worst that can happen is that someone links to your imageurl from another site and your server carries the traffic.

the day your traffic runs to couple of million hits a day you will have a problem and that would mean that you're hosting something of interest (to someone.)

Keep an eye on your traffic logs if you are worried about this.

the urls are safe. this is how the web works, linking is the basis of the web. if it's abused that's a different problem to being hacked, and there are usually simple ways to deal with that.

    ciao

ps thanks for the appeal for help on my behalf, but I'm doing fine.
