Basic Functions Request (11 posts)

Here are some supposedly "basic" functions I am dying to have in WordPress.

    1. Post auto-expiration and repetition.

Specifically, I need to make a post that appears on one day of the year for people to comment on, then hides itself until that same day the next year. However, weekly- and monthly- repeating posts and posts that expire over time also seem pretty basic. Why does nobody ever do anything like this? It seems pretty basic to me, and I need this function badly. I know there are plugins for repeating events, but they don't do what I need them to do.

    2. Autocorrect

I want to be able to change words like "star wars empire strikes back" to "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" automatically. I consider that basic functionality. There is one plugin for word replacement, but it only supports like 24 replacement phrases total, at a time. I need hundreds.

    3. Secondary index ("Home") pages, that only display posts of certain categories.

I want to have an art page that displays art and an article about it, by date. All the art has to be in the "Art" category so all the normal "Home Page" posts don't show up on my art page.

If anyone else cares about these incredibly useful features, please comment here. These are very important to me.

  2. 1. Yes, that does sound kind of basic, but also quite specialized. I recommend hiring a plugin developer to make something for you. http://jobs.wordpress.net/

    2. Also basic, but also specialized. Will you be entering the "hundreds" of replacements by yourself? If not, where you get the source list from, how would you access it? It seems to me that it would be much less of a hassle to type it correctly in the first place, or manually edit after the fact. Again, I recommend hiring a developer.

P.S. I removed your offensive suggestion. Please keep it civil around here, even if you're just trying to make a point.

    3. Create a custom page template and follow this example to exclude/include specific categories from the loop.

    4. The edit feature was removed for regular users as it did more harm than good (folks adjusting their original post rather than simply replying, clearing the post altogether when an issue was resolved, or changing details while other members were trying to diagnose their problems), but I made the change for you (and deleted the reply requesting it).

Alright. Thanks. For #2, I planned on making the list myself, and it was there to make posts and comments on my site that other people typed look more professional, like in the example. I want a nice site, but also a large community. Sometimes the two don't mix well, and I wanted this to help.

  4. That sounds like something can be made by just improving the plugin you mentioned earlier. Still, I'd recommend hiring someone for it. It doesn't sound like it would be popular enough to be rolled into the core.

Also, I tried to make a page that lists posts from a single category, and it's not working. I can't choose the new template php thing I uploaded when I make a new page. Is it just my theme? Regardless, I shouldn't have to get into code to be able to do this. I'm not a coder. I'm an artist. I can't think in figures and jumbled lines of code like you people can, and you guys can't do the kind of art I can do. Let's make this fair for people like me and get some core support for these things, or at least some working plugins. This is too much for me to take.

Here's my site. I took a theme called "Spexel" and a phpBB forums theme called "Black Pearl" and turned them into this, all by myself. But I can't code. I don't think like that. I just want to focus on getting what I need to get done and leave the code to people who can figure out how to do it. *sigh*

See, this is why we need to be able to edit our posts. Anyway, my site is http://www.sonicreboot.com

By the way, that theme called "Spexel" has no support anymore... That kinda scares me. It's the best theme I've ever seen. Actually, second-best now, now that I got my hands on it. xD

  8. I can't choose the new template php thing I uploaded when I make a new page. Is it just my theme?

If you've coded it properly per the guide, it should appear in the templates menu to the right when you create a page.

Let's make this fair for people like me and get some core support for these things, or at least some working plugins.

I'm sure the feature may be in the core some day. I see enough requests for it, but it's just not a high enough priority, considering that it can be done via templates for now. And, considering that, I doubt anyone would just volunteer to write a plugin for it.

Sometimes you just have to hire someone to make it work for you. You've already got the most awesome free blogging platform around, what's a few extra dollars for some features that no one has yet? You could even release the plugin with the developer you hired and be the hero that brings the features to the masses.

Alright, could I ask you for a quick favor, then? Could YOU code the thing for me? Because I can't wrap my head around this. No, you don't have to. I'm just asking. I'm sure all you have to do is copy a few lines of code from the pages you gave me, but even if it's simple for you, to me it's like... a jumbled mess...

But thanks for the insight. I don't have any money, but I will keep what you said in mind. Maybe someday I will help get these things developed in a popular plugin format.

  10. Could YOU code the thing for me?

If you hire me, yes. Sorry that I can't do it for free, but there's time involved, and I have other things that must be taken care of. I suppose someone else may stumble across this topic and offer to do it for free, so don't give up just yet.
