• Hi, I am brand new to wordpress and havent even started using it yet – I am trying to pick a theme. I wanted to know how much of the content is editable? Is every written word you see on a template changeable? Is every image?
If you have a side bar navigation column which has 6 options, can i change it and make it 4 or does it have to remain as 6? If there is an image on the left hand side of the page and its a certain size can i make it bigger/smaller or does it have to stay the same size?

I appreciate these are probably ridiculously basic questions but I cant find clear answers.

Thanks so much for your time,

    Jemma

The answer really depends on the theme you’re using. Most themes let you edit the sidebar content by adding, removing, and editing widgets in the Appearance/Widgets panel. Some themes have their own settings to configure after installation. And most themes can be altered by editing the actual theme files in the Appearance/Editor panel.

Thank you – is there any way of knowing how editable a theme is before choosing it? will it tell you which bits of it can change and which bits cant?

Some theme authors mention what you can do to the theme in its description, but you will probably have to install them first to find out the extent of their editability.

Most themes should be 90% – 100% editable via widgets and/or directly editing the theme files.

thank you. i can get all the way to the end, i have downloaded mamp and wordpress, its just when i try the very last bit and it tells me to go to my browser and put in localhost:port/wordpress – it just says ‘Firefox doesn’t know how to open this address, because the protocol (localhost) isn’t associated with any program.’ what am i doing wrong?

ok so maybe this means something – i put into my browser localhost:3306/wordpress, and it said ‘you’ve chosen to download wordpress etc’ it only lets me save or open it with text edit, so then i hit download and then i get this text edit box come up that says ‘4

It sounds like MAMP may be misconfigured. Someone on the MAMP forums should be able to help you with that.
