I would recommend you download your latest large backup and one of your older ones, unzip the files and then compare the contents of the zips to see what the new backup contains that is so much bigger.

    [SOLVED]
    Hi Tom,

The download kept timing out before completion, so I had a root around my WP folders and found a large backup made by the codetree wp backup plugin – around 380MB! I had installed a number of other backup plugins before settling on BackUpWordpress, and didn’t think they had made backups 🙁
    So, problem solved!

    Thanks for your quick response.

    Hi Anthony,

Great to hear to you got the problem solved, can I ask why you went for BackUpWordPres?

Shame there isn’t an easier way to ad directories to exclude within WP admin.
Do you think you’ll be adding that option soon?

Do you mean some sort of interface for managing which files and directories are excluded from the backups?

Whilst we would love to add this feature we do not have any plans to implement it at the moment. I think it could be quite complicated to do it really well.
