Online Backup for WordPress
Backups failing due to space? (16 posts)

    Hi there,

I'm really rather new to backups, so apologies for asking such a basic question.

I've been trying to backup both the database and filesystem (both separately and together) and the only thing I've been able to backup successfully so far is the database on its own, locally, compressed and encrypted. I cannot get the filesystem to backup.

It either tells me the file size for the filesystem is too large for online storage (104.46 MiB), or if I try to back it up locally, it says, "The activity cannot proceed any further due to an unknown problem. Please visit the Help & Support section for information on where to find help."

I imagine a backup of the database without the filesystem is pretty useless, and as I've said, I'm totally new to this backing up of my own blog :( so unfortunately I don't even know where to begin. Any help gratefully received!

    Hi clcwords,

If you email support "at" backup-technology.co.uk your username for online backup they will usually increase your quota free of charge so you can upload more than 100MB - usually they give 250MB if you ask nicely :-)

For the unknown error - what is the last message in the event log before it happens? So we can see where abouts the problem occurs. If you go to Activity Log and click View Events on the failed backup it will show the event log.

    Hi Jason,

Thank you so much for the reply! I will email and politely ask if there's anything they can do :)

For the unknown error, the activity log is as follows:

28th Sep 2013 7.58.17 AM Warning The activity cannot proceed any further due to an unknown problem. Please visit the Help & Support section for information on where to find help.
27th Sep 2013 6.28.37 PM Information File system backup completed.
27th Sep 2013 6.17.22 PM Information Folder /cheyennecampbell.com/wp-content/backups was excluded: Local backups directory
27th Sep 2013 5.39.23 PM Information Folder /cheyennecampbell.com/wp-content/plugins/wponlinebackup/tmp was excluded: Temporary backup directory
27th Sep 2013 5.36.31 PM Information Initialisation completed.
27th Sep 2013 5.36.31 PM Information Backup starting...

I'm also curious as to why, when I backed up the database successfully, it was compressed. I can't find any box to tick for this, which obviously would help when backing up the filesystem. Does it just try to compress automatically?

    Thanks for not mocking a newbie :}

    Hi clcwords,

Compression is used automatically when enabled. There is no option to stop it at the moment.

For the local backup unknown problem, we'd like to diagnose if you are willing. We have a plugin version that creates a log file you can email to us:
    https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/plugin/wponlinebackup-719-tracing.zip

This will create a trace.log file. If you go Help & Support you can download it (there is a link at the bottom - right-click Save target as or something). Just reproduce the issue, download the trace.log, then compress it in a ZIP file and email it to us: support "at" backup-technology.co.uk. Remember to mention my name and link to this topic so it gets through the filtering.

    Thanks,

    Jason

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for the reply. I did as you suggested and emailed with a polite request for increased quota, but unfortunately haven't heard back.

As for the plugin above, I downloaded it and went to the install plugins page on my WP site, but received the following message:

    "Unpacking the package…

    Installing the plugin…

    Destination folder already exists. /home/chylucam78/cheyennecampbell.com/wp-content/plugins/wponlinebackup/

    Plugin install failed."

So far, not having the best of luck with this!

    Hi clcwords,

You must remove the current version before you can add another one. WordPress won't let you install two versions.

WordPress doesn't let you do manual upgrades either so you need to delete and install again.

I will ask to check for your email. When did you send it?

    Hi Jason,

I sent the email to the address above: support at backup-technology.co.uk on 30 September. Thanks for looking into it for me.

I didn't realise I needed to delete the current plugin. I've done so now, and will email you the trace log zip from another failed backup of the filesystem. Thanks again for your help!

    Hi Cheyenne,

We have another trace version we just patched:
    https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/plugin/wponlinebackup-722-tracing.zip

Can you delete the old one and upload this one and try it out?
If you still get issues you can send us the log again.

We noticed that the backup was running through, just extremely slowly. It noticed it had a failure and tried to slow down to avoid another - but slowed down way too much! So we've fixed that and it should only slow down momentarily, and not as harshly, and pick up speed again straight away. Hopefully it should fix the problem.

    Regards,

    Jason

On the "General Settings" screen, below the encryption information it now says:

    "Backup Behavior

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_FUNCTION in /home/chylucam78/cheyennecampbell.com/wp-content/plugins/wponlinebackup/include/files.php on line 1024"

I've just tried to run the local filesystem backup once more, and it's failed. Unfortunately, in this new version you've given me, under Help & Support, there IS no link to download a trace log for you.

Something bizarre - usually it tries this backup for as long as I'll give it (hours), but this time it lasted only 31 seconds before failing.

    Any further suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Cheyenne

    Hi Cheyenne,

Apologies, that version was the wrong one, it's a newer non-tracing one, here is the correct one:
    https://wordpress.backup-technology.co.uk/plugin/wponlinebackup-724-tracing.zip

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for that. I'll keep trying that link, though right now it's not opening for me, saying the server can't be found.

I'll let you know when I've tried it.

    Cheers,
    Cheyenne

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for that. I've just emailed the trace log from the new plugin above. It didn't time out on its own but went for quite awhile, twice, and I stopped it because it got to around 66% (as it usually does) and just stays there.

    Thanks,
    Cheyenne

    Hi,

There are a few directories with large files which are ultimately causing the problem. The plugin is not able to process them.

    /backwpups
    /wp-content/uploads/backwpup-a8e60-temp
    /wp-content/uploads/backwpup-e13d8-backups

There may be other folders in /wp-content/uploads that you can exclude too.

Meanwhile, I've done a few more tweaks. One is to improve skipping - it would generally skip after 3 failed attempts at a file but detecting it is not as accurate as it can be. I've also thought of a way to improve the file backup so the size of file where things begin to timeout will be bigger, so it might work better for some larger files. I'll work on getting another version to you soon.

If you can try excluding those folders above, and if there are any other backup folders, exclude those too. Things might run much better already.

    Regards,

    Jason

I honestly have no idea what I'm doing!

Thanks for all your help in this. I'm on a sketchy connection all day today so I'll try this out tonight when I'm able to, and report back. I appreciate your help and valuable time!

    Hi Jason,

I'm sending you the latest trace log, after having omitted the above 3 files you mentioned in the custom field under general settings. It's still freezing around 66%.

    Thanks,
    Cheyenne
