backup directory (9 posts)

    Hello,
I'm desperately trying to upgrade my blog http://labeet.dk to the latest version. But when trying to do the initial back-up I get this message:
WARNING: Your backup directory does NOT exist, and we cannot create it.

Using your FTP client, try to create the backup directory yourself: /hsphere/local/home/nelanela/labeet.dk/wp-content/backup-16e19/

I've tried to do so, but with no luck. Where exactly do I install this and do I need to add anything?

AND - above the elaborate instructions on how to manually install updates it says that it only works for sites with an address ending on /wordpress. What to do when you site just has a normal address?

    Hey Labeet,

Only works on what now? That's strange. What are you using to do this backup, a plugin? Some host-specific script?

Remember that you should back up your database too! Do not assume that your backup utility that handles the files will handle the database. If you have the options, choose the 'structure and content' option with the 'drop if exist' option (you'll see it) when generating the db backup. It makes life easier if you have multiple problems on a restore...

How did you try to create the backup-16e19 folder in the wp-content folder? Remember that you'll also have to change the permissions to at least 0744, or is it 0755, anyway.

Uh, thanks for reply. I'm afraid you're way ahead of me. Don't really understand your answer... :-(

    1) Yes, a plug-in. It's called WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.2.2
    2) I've got these backup files now: wpau-db-backupvFdcBodk.zip, wpau-files-bak-hEcGzEED.zip, wpau-files-bak-tCzAftdd.zip. Names mean nothing to me, maybe to you?
    3) I tried to create backup folder in root dir. Haven't tried the contents folder.
    4) Where do I change permissions?

As you can see, I'm an amateur...

    Thanks for you time anyway,
    Néné

Ah I see, interesting. I have never used it.

When you say you 'have these files', do you mean you have a copy of the files on your PC? If not, click on the link that the plugin created and save the files to your PC. No use creating a backup and not saving it!

Give me a moment to install the plugin and check it out...

I see. I had no problems so it may be a permissions issue on your wp-content folder.

Do you know how to change the permissions on that folder to 0755?

    As far as the filenames...

    e.g. wpau-db-backupvFdcBodk.zip

This is the wpau-db-backup file, the WP Automatic Database back file that has been compressed in the zip format.

The vFdcBodk part is a random name the system uses to make sure it's not overwriting other backup files...it's a precaution.

Similarly with the wpau-files-bak-*.zip Notice how you have two file backups and one db backup file?

It would be a good idea to go in and rename the random part of the filename with something useful to you, so you know what it's about e.g.
    wpau-files-bak-2008_Oct_12_BEFORE_wp2_4_to_wp4_2_upgrade.zip

Actually, you helped me through the first bit. The automatic back-up now works. Thank you! Your explanations about the file names were also very useful.

But I still can't run the automatic upgrade. The message is long, but seems to repeat itself. I've tried to change permissions on the automatic-upgrade folder in the same way I did for the automatic-backup folder (which I successfully created thanks to you).

this is the message I get from WordPress:

Warning: ftp_site(): /: Operation not permitted in /hsphere/local/home/nelanela/labeet.dk/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade 2/wpau_prelimcheck.class.php on line 185 Warning: ftp_chdir(): ///wp-admin: No such file or directory in /hsphere/local/home/nelanela/labeet.dk/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade 2/wpau_prelimcheck.class.php on line 222 Warning: ftp_chdir(): ///wp-includes: No such file or directory in /hsphere/local/home/nelanela/labeet.dk/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade 2/wpau_prelimcheck.class.php on line 222

Hmm, I'm guessing here, but it looks like the juicy bits of the message are: Warning: ftp_chdir(): ///wp-admin: No such file or directory and Warning: ftp_chdir(): ///wp-includes: No such file or directory

The /// part doesn't look right and suggests that a path (an address/way to get to a place!) is incorrect.

It could also be that the ftp_chdir() fairy does not have permission to change to that directory (the directory is locked).

Let me install the plugin and look at the config' options...

No config. It's an install and run type.

    Hmm.

Oh. You know what, the name of the plugin folder.

It must not have a space 2 in it. Check the folder name!
If it has a space 2 in it, deactivate the plugin, rename the folder to wordpress-automatic-upgrade, reactivate the plugin.

    I see there's a WP 2.6.3 today!

I successfully upgraded from 2.6.2 to 2.6.3 using this plugin.

I thought the presentation of the status changes a tad non-intuitive (no offense!) but pleasingly verbose, especially the log at the end.

I've been too busy to dabble with this, but today I tried again. I un-installed and deleted the -2 file and downloaded it again and re-installed it as wordpress-automatic-upgrade. Now I get an even longer message :-(

The file it says I must install, where exactly should I install it?

Please remember that you're "speaking" to a complete amateur. Don't take it for granted that I understand anything...
