Backing up my site... (8 posts)

    Do i really need to use one of other methods or can i just copy all the files from my ftp onto my harddrive (lets say weekly)...

    If not... whats the best way to backup my site as it is rite now.. all settings/content/images.. everything...

    You are half way there, by copying the files.

    You also need to backup the Database that WordPress is using. If you have cPanel, it is really easy. Otherwise, you have to use phpMyAdmin.

    Depending on what FTP software you use, you could lose a file, or parts of a file, when you copy that many files. FileZilla will tell you if it runs into problems, but some people don't look at the Failed Transfers tab.

    My personal preference is to compress all the files in a single tar.gz on web host -- again, cPanel has a nice File Manager that makes that easy -- and then FTP that. As long as you select all the right files -- or just select public_html and save yourself some trouble -- it is going to work properly every time.

    You will, however, need something like 7Zip to restore a single file more easily.

    The content of your site (posts, pages & categories) are stored in your database - not in files. You need to back up your database regularly. If you wish, you can also backup your themes, plugins and uploads by downloading a copy of the wp-content folder.

    when backing up using phpMYadmin how do i know which data base is mine? theres to.. "conseptc_wrd2 & information_schema"

    nevermind so i found out its "conseptc_wrd2" and i followed the instructions on the page provided by esmi using the phpMyadmin step by step the zipped file is only 154kb does that sound about rite?

    Yes, one of mine that I just backed up this afternoon is 176KB.

    What about selecting Export? Isn't that enough, or do you also need to back up the database?

    It may no longer be true, but I've been burned pretty badly in the past by what WASN'T included in Export. There always seemed to be some option or another that didn't get set properly when I imported.
