    I have a background image plain colour with top to bottom gradient. I can see the image at the top and bottom but not on the sides. I seem to have altered everything on style.css
    I'm using twenty-twelve theme. http://www.mike-powell.com

    I can't see where you mean, can you provide more annotation of where the problem is?

    if you visit the site, you will see that the background image is visible at the top/bottom of the screen but not on the sides.
    div.hfeed.site shows padding which is opaque (white as background). Somehow need to put a transparent margin on left and right

    I'm not sure I follow you, but you can use CSS transparency as a background image;

    #page {
     background: transparent;
    }
