available page width

Is there a way for a plugin to query WP to determine the available width to display the current page/post? I use a variable width theme and sometimes use a single-sidebar template and othertimes a dual-sidebar template, and I’d like to write a plugin that customizes a table display based on the active width of the “main section” of the page.
