Automatically added uri segment

Hi, I am relatively new to wordpress and I was wondring if anyone could help me figure out why the children of my home page are having a uri segment added to them which is not present in the home page url.

E.g. Home page Url is http://www.example.com
Child page url is http://www.example.com/first-page-2/child-slug

As you can see here there is the addition of first-page-2 slug to the url. Why? How do I remove it?

I have in the past created a couple of home pages but since removed them so I feel this is possibly the reason for the additional segment but it is currently baffling me.

SETTINGS:
WordPress Address (URL): http://www.example.com
Site Address (URL): http://www.example.com

PERMALINK COMMON SETTINGS:
Post Name http://www.example.com/sample-post/
