   When I try to automatically update a plug-in I get the following error:

   Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.zip

   Unpacking the update

   Could not create directory

   I changed the plugins directory to 777 and still no luck. Any idea on how I go about trouble shooting the problem?

   chmod to 777 on wp-content dir

   That got over the create directory problem. Thank you Macbros. I also had to change the permissions on the akismet directory to 777 so it could remove the old plug-in but now it throws another error:

   Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.zip

   Unpacking the update

   Removing the old version of the plugin

   Installing the latest version

   Installation failed

   The Akismet directory is now empty. It does bring up related question it's it a security risk to keep these directories at 777.
