Automatic login and redirect after registration

When a new user registers on my site, I would like them to be automatically logged in to the site and redirected to the page they were on before being prompted to register. As a second choice (but not as great), I would like them to register, be prompted to log in, and then redirected to the page they were on before being prompted to register.
I currently have the box checked in Redirection Settings for a subscriber to be sent back to the page they were on before logging in.
Right now, after someone registers for my site, they are prompted to log in. After they log in, they are directed back to the registration page, because that’s where they were before logging in. This is such a frustrating loop for the user!!! I just want them to get back to the page they were on before being prompted to register. I want this to be easy for the user!
Any help and suggestions are so appreciated! I’ve wasted my whole morning on this and haven’t found a successful thread in the forum.
