I am using WP and want to upgrade to 2.8 latest ones as it has many new features. I tried auto upgrade. But it just unpacks the archive and stops for hours. Nothing happens. Even if I repeat it 100 times it is the same. What should I do and please tell me steps to replicate this issue.

do the upgrade the old fashioned way -- download the zip, unpack the files, and upload them.
