Obviously this 2.8 version has many bugs. I upgraded (I think I did not seem to have an option) and now I am trying to get my host company to restore a 3 day old version. I am not exactly sure which day I upgraded to this, however, so this may not work.
I tried doing a manual restore but I still got 2.8 showing as the version being used.
I think an automated way of downgrading would be very helpful especially considering the issues of this software.

Most of the problems are related to plugin and theme compatibility, not bugs in the core.
If you have a backup of your database and a backup of your files at 2.7.1 (or whatever previous version), then delete (DROP) your existing database tables, delete your existing files, then restore your database, and restore your files.
Though I'd would say -1 to an "automatic revert routine" you might consider creating a ticket at trac (see Reporting Bugs).
