Auto keyword linking

I’m about to demolish and rebuild my ageing but successful website and have chosen WordPress as the foundation. I’m keen to make it very accessible and interactive and have had an idea on how I can tie my content and external sources together.

This stems from the idea of affiliate links – I’d like to be able to define keywords (such as manufacturer or product name) in my content have something that auto generates a dropdown menu that displays the following:

• a link to the original manufacturers or product site
• a search link to find all related news stories in my site
• a search link to find all related reviews in my site
• a search link for my Youtube account
• a search link for my Flickr account

Ideally, I’d like for this to appear only in the first instance of the word in a post rather than littering my content with annoying links.

Does anyone know if this can be done, or am I looking at getting some WordPress wiz to knock me up a plugin?

I will thank you Michael. Seeing as you’re a moderator round here and therefore a WordPress expert, this suggests to me that what I’m after can’t be done with anything that you’re aware of?

I don’t know of a plugin that does that, but you might find something at:

Use one of these plugins as a starting point:

Then edit the code to not generate a link, but a little popup of sorts with your desired info.

Oooh – they’re somewhere close and quite hackable into what I need. I wonder if my long forgotten PHP skills can hack it?

So I had a play, and I should be able to get Lexicon to work. I edited the PHP so that it used the keyword to search my Flickr account, which means Youtube shouldn’t be an issue, not should searching my WordPress blog by keyword either.

Dropdowns can be done with lists and CSS, as seen here with a simple demo here.

The one small issue I have to work through is having a manufacturer link to the keyword. But I suspect I’ll be able to work my way through the plug-in to add a second field and have that as the link in the top of the dropdown menu.

If I’m successful, I’ll let you see the results. Thanks guys for the direction.
