    This plugin uses the https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_avatar function.

    When the email is wrong is returned a default gravatar, but your site is not returning anything.

    Probably some other plugin that overwriting the get_avatar() function.

    Try disabling plugin by plugin until you find the guilty.
    I also recommend trying to test with a standard WordPress theme (theme that come along with WordPress).
