Authentication (client certificate)

It seems there are a few discussions [1] [2] about generalizing the authentication module. I realize this may be a difficult task (since it may require fundamental changes to anything related to roles) but are there any plug-ins/hacks out today that come close? In particular, I’m interested in client certificate authentication, which is already in use by all other services at our institution and thus could free users from needing to manage yet another account.
