at the very beginning: design vs. installation

    A complete newb question — I have used other blogging software but i will be using WordPress via another host. I want to download the software, design the site, then upload it to the host. Is that doable? Does “installation” refer to getting it on my computer or getting it up on the host? Do I have to install on the host before I can design the site?

    Yes, it’s possible. See installing WordPress locally. But a word of warning – moving a complete site from a local to a remote sever is not straightforward. See Moving_WordPress for the full, gory, details.

    A a new user, you might be better off working on your site on the remote server using your web browser – behind a “coming soon” page if necessary. Local installs are really best reserved for theme and plugin development.
