• Hi,
I am really hoping someone can help me here. I know this is an easy fix for a programmer or someone who knows about wordpress, but I have spent the past 24 hours trying to figure out what is wrong.

I did have the Google XML sitemap plugin but switched it out for another one. When I try to add my sitemap to google, this is the error I get:

My URL is indexed but when I try to add the sitemap to google, it says:

    http://www.motherinlawhell.com/
    Example: sitemap.xml
    Example: directory/other_sitemap.xml
    URL restricted by robots.txt
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.

I deleted the robots.txt file so I an not sure how it can be blocked…

  • Here are a few things to consider:

    1. An XML sitemap is not required to use Google Webmaster Tools.
    2. Use of a sitemap will neither improve your search engine rankings nor increase your number of indexed pages in search engines.
    3. WordPress already does a great job by default at linking to your content, so an XML sitemap is really not needed with it.
    4. A faulty XML sitemap can cause you problems with search engines.

One thing to look at if you are having sitemap or robots.txt problems is if you are getting URL Unreachable errors in Google Webmaster Tools. If you are not signed up with it, I’d recommend doing so.
