  • Are there any good askimet alternatives available?

I am not anti askimet but I had always thought askimet was a community service provided freely to combat spam, but I discovered today it is actually a pay for subscription service. I don’t mind paying for something and using it but the ongoing cost can get costly over time.

So basically if it is something I need to pay for I want to check to see if there is something just as good or better available, even if it too is a commercial plugin. As I said I am not against paying, I just want to be sure I look at all the options available for my money.

Can I also ask why askimet is bundled with WordPress then if it is not a free community service? Surely if it is in the spirit of WordPress and was a community service then sure keep it bundled, but since it is not and it is a commercial venture, then I think it should be removed from the base install. If you want it and want to pay for it by all means get it and install it. WordPress should not bundle any commercial plugins with its installation, this is not fair to every other commercial plugin venture as they should have just as many rights to be bundled in WordPress installation as askimet does imho.

    Cheers

Yes I understand it is free fro non commercial use, however it still does ask for a payment which if you are like me you feel compelled to provide.

Based on the fact that it is not a ‘free for all’ plugin I again think that it should be removed from the WordPress base installation. If not then every other plugin that has a similar free for non commercial use should also be included with the base install of WordPress.

I am not trying to pick a fight or arguement here, it is simply a case of being true to what WordPress is and being as I said fair to all other plugin providers. I mean I bet there are many plugin providers that have plugins that are totally free (for ‘any’ purpose) that would love to be included in the base install of WordPress.

I use G.A.S.P. and it will block every bot comment. You will have to fight real humans yourself, but it helps so much and I like it 10 times better than Akismet.

Thanks for that Brankica, maybe the WordPress devs should replace Askimet with G.A.S.P. then 🙂

Of course that will not be done, as there are other similar plugins like the math question ones. I wonder if Askimet is owned and run by WordPress itself or one of the developers, that would be the reason why it is included then.
