Joomla has a possibility to display selected articles as featured in coloumn layout style on front page and other pages. I have not been able to do the same with WordPress so far. This is a nice feature that I would like to see in WordPress also.

You can do that with themes and categories.
Make a category called 'featured' and then edit your theme to show the category as you want.
