I am using arclite theme. I have made a few customizations but in general it is the straight up theme. I would like my header logo to span the entire page (www.thewanderingscholar.org) so that you no longer see the brown background which is part of the arclite theme. Alternatively I would like to be able to make the brown the same color blue as my logo. Either way works form me? Any thoughts? Would making a wider image for the logo work? For some reason that doesn't appear to be the solution.

On what size screen? 1024px wide? 1280 px wide? 1600px? Given that the screen being used to view your site could be anything from a 3" cell phone screen to a 21"+ monitor, you may begin to understand why you can't make one image with fixed dimensions fit all of the available screens. Far better to blend the header color to match your logo.
As I understand it, you should be able to achieve this via your theme's custom options page. Just upload a very small image (say 4 x 4 px) that matches your logo background and set it to tile.

Thanks Esmi- Right. I was thinking that the real issue is that background color is brown. I'm not sure about arclite's ability to upload additional images (beyond the logo itself) to the header. Are you suggesting uploading it via ftp? Or just through the custom options?
I've never used Arclite but looking at the generated CSS, It does look like your can upload an image to your header. It's using a 900px wide brown image right now. Have a look in Appearance -> Header or Appearance -> Theme Options.

Umm... you probably should just look at arclite.
