Using archives widget that came with WP as drop-down at bottom of first column. No matter what month I click, it redirects to the home page.

Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting and deleting/renaming your WordPress .htaccess file. If this works, then set your custom permalink structure back up

Thank you, esmi. I have taken the steps you suggest, but there appears to be no change in my archive status.

Did the archives work when you used the default permalink setting?

No, they didn't work with the default setting either. I also did a database check and it showed OK on eveyrthing.

Have you moved the site since WordPress was installed?

No, it is still at the same place. I was using "Simple Yearly Archives plugin for a long time and hadn't checked archives in awhile. When I did, I found it not working. So I deactivated "Simle Yearly Archives," and used the WP archive widget, but it still is not working.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    You nailed it, emsi!

I did as you suggested, and it the culprit was the robots meta plugin. Working great without it! The generic drop down archives are still at the bottom, but I've also re-added the Simple Yearly Archives plugin ("Archive" tab at top).

One further question: I had chronic illness from 2007 to early 2010, improving now. During that time I was unable to keep the blog updated, but I am filling in the gap now by posting items readers sent during that time. I am back-dating them to the appropriate year and month in which they were sent. Is there any danger that this back-dating could interfere with the archives working properly in the future?

    Thanks for all you help!

    Lois

    No - no danger whatsoever.
