What's the difference between these two templates?

I tried searching, but it's kind of hard to get results with these two keywords...

archive.php - is a regular WP template file to display the posts listed in your monthly or catgeory "archive" list > http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy

    archives.php - is a Page template.

Check out the default theme, compare the code in the two files and you'll see the difference.

oh, so archives.php and links.php are both a type of page templates that if I don't choose to use it, no one will see it?

then is it safe to delete these files from my theme folder?

You can delete them, although they won't bother anybody sitting there :) - no one can see ever your physical template files, unless you shoose to use them to display content with them.
And they are not "a type of Page templates" - they ARE real Page templates.

I'm going to delete them anyways because archive.php and archives.php is too confusing for me.

Thank you so much for your help!
