No biggie, just head over to WordPress.com and log in to your account (or sign up for one if you don't have one already). Then head into your admin panel if you aren't there already.

Click on the My Account link in the top right corner of the window, and note the API key in the first paragraph under the heading. Now, go to your other site's Plugins > Akismet Configuration page in your admin panel. Then, enter your WordPress.com API key into the text box (copying and pasting is a good way), and click on the "Update API Key" button.

There you go, now you officially have Akismet up and protecting your blog from spam.

    Hi Dee,

the instructions on the akismet page are actually quite right. I understand the confusion, but the reason you have to get an API key from wordpress.com regardless of where your blog lives, is because the key gives you access to the akismet online service.

Think of it as going to wp.com to get a key to akismet's front door... when you think of it that way, it makes sense that the key isn't on YOUR site.

    I'm confussed but almost understand.

SO - even though I have a .ORG wp blog
I go and open up a .COM wp blog JUST to get the API Key??????

Why does that seem not quite right if we need one on .ORG?

I just want to do it correctly.

    Now you have it!
As stated. com just uses there servers to serve the api key to anyone who signs up.

Why does that seem not quite right if we need one on .ORG?

youre not hosted on .org, you are self hosted. You are just using software that have downloaded from .org

If you want to use use something from amazon.com on your web site, you are required to get an account on amazon.com and use certain "things" so that they can identity you -- affiliate ID, whatever.. Thats because you are using a service that originates from a server that they control.

The same holds true for askimet -- its hosted on an external server over which someone else (other than you) has control. If you want to use it, you need the key.
