I've searched and seem to be stalled with WP on security protection issue. First I am not a 'puter wizard or geek. I'm a point an click guy. I have been given job of admin a WP page to be linked to a church website for church leaders and staff to easily have open/anytime meetings and discussion process short of mass sending and receiving emails. Forum type atmosphere.

I viewed a similar post here at 1.5 catagory (I think)

Is there anyone out there who can hack a plugin to require viewers to go through a login page before being allowed to access and view the WP site I'm try to build and learn. Thank you for any help. I may cross post in another catagory hoping for a hit. I hope that won't offend

I hope I'm understanding what you want. By default, any user has to "register" and "login" in order to get access.

You can learn all about WordPress and how it works on the WordPress Codex at http://codex.wordpress.org. Here are some specific articles to help you get started:

  3. If you'd like to keep visitors from the entire blog (rather than just the admin interface), or restrict your blog to only certain readers, just use .htaccess authentication. It's easy, secure, time-tested, and the most widely-used solution out there.

I second mac's suggestion, htaccess is the quickest and cleanest way to create a barrier between your page and the visitor. And it should work both in the long and short term should you require it.

Additionally if you use Cpanel via your host there are several options there too

I would also suggest reading up on some .htaccess - a very powerful tool for items just like you've mentioned. You can allow or disallow access by any number of methods and it's far less "messy" then hacks, for that matter I've yet to see a vaild hack for WP (other then spamming) that is usefull in this area. I would simply suggest you have .htaccess either password protect a page or validate by IP. It's very easy to do and only takes a minute or two to setup. I concure with "max"

If the intention of the site is to provide a Forum type atomosphere, why are you not looking into one of the many Forum software available, phpBB, InvisionBoard, and so on that allow you to restrict access without being first logged in and so on?

Why make WordPress, a blogging software, a forum?

    Regards
