   So, I did a search and turned up a number of topics, among them:

   But none of them resolved the problem. In the meantime I can just use the_excerpt() instead of the_content() (which might be safer for the other users making posts regardless), but I'm curious why it might not be working.

   Yes. I'd suggest placing it immediately before <?php the_content('Read the rest of this entry »'); ?>
