• Hey guys,

I understand this is a common issue with people who poke around in the .php one too many times, and I’ve seen a few fixes on here. I’m very much a beginner, and likely had no business fooling with the functions.php, but alas, I did.

I’ve read that the only way to fix the error is to restore the original theme, yet I’m not quite sure of how to even do that.

Can somebody please explain to me, as though I were a third grader, the easiest way to restore the site? I’m not sure how to re-edit any of the code, as I’m unable to access any part of the website, or dashboard.

    Thanks everybody,

  • Download a fresh copy of your theme to your computer. Open the archive and extract the functions.php file. Upload this file to your theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP (or whatever file management application your host provides),

That’s an excellent way of stating it, “as if I were a 3rd grader”, that’s how I feel too. Same error and situation for me.

I downloaded the new theme copy, copied the html from the functions.php file, opened my old one in ftp, and pasted the html on there. I was prompted to update at server, and answered yes.

    Still not fixed.

Did I do something wrong, or do I have to go further, like replace the entire theme?

Obviously I want to avoid this, as I’ll have to redo all of my plug-ins and edits I’ve done to the theme.

    Thanks.
