Another Comments Problem, mabye a new WP 3.0 bug? (19 posts)

This is now the second time this has happened in the last 2 weeks. I don't do anything but my settings / discussion settings get changed. The following two settings were changed to being "checked" rather than "unchecked".

    • An administrator must always approve the comment
    • Users must be registered and logged in to comment

When this happens I also have to go in and bulk edit all my posts to "allow comments" or enable comments, as they are all disabled.

Others seem to be having this issue too, is this a new WP 3.0 bug?

When this first happened I changed all the settings and then deactivated my plugins. After getting bombarded with SPAM I put the few plugins I use back active. Everything seemed fine until about 1-2 weeks later BAM it happened again.

I have scaled back plugins even more this time, now I'm using the latest version of:
    Akismet
    Efficient Related Posts
    Fast Secure Contact Form
    FD Feedburner Plugin
    WordPress.com Stats
    WPtouch
(all say they're compatible up to 3.0.1)
And my theme = Staypressed 1.4

is this a new WP 3.0 bug

I am using 3.0.1 for a while and never had this problem. Based on that, I don't think it is a bug.

The issue you are experiencing is likely due to plugins.

Your theme / plugins both could be the culprit.

    Therefore, try:

-deactivating all plugins. If the problem goes away, activate them individually to find the culprit?

-If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the default theme (Twenty Ten) by renaming your current theme's folder in wp-content/themes to rule out any theme-specific issue?

The problem is this just happens. I'm supposed to redesign my blog and turn off all plugins (akismet included), and just wait for two weeks to see if it doesn't recur, and if it doesn't then put the plugins back on?

It's very frustrating. How could a plugin or a theme even let a change in the comment approval parameters happen?

    Conflict?

I just don't understand how a plugin can cause an approval to revert to some other setting, that's all. Is it that certain plugins would interfere with certain themes or something?

As for WP 3.0.1, I didn't have any problems until WP 3 came out and I upgraded to that.

    it's possible.

Also, code changes, modifications, tweaks, etc., made by the site developer may as well give rise to conflicts.

Someone's having the same problems with no plugins, and a default theme:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/comments-closed-on-all-posts-over-6-days-old-on-two-blogs?replies=25#post-1793918

Which makes me think it is a bug.

I use the default Twenty Ten without any plugins, NO such issue.

    Have you tried:

-If the above steps do not resolve the issue, Download WordPress again and replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies. This should replace your core files without changing your content and settings in wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory.

the other person with the same issue said:

So I just reactivated only feedburner.

Could just be a coincidence, but after reading both threads, I don't think either gave it the proper time to investigate and rule out this plugin as the offender.

Since this problem took a couple weeks before it recurred on me, I'm not sure how to test it all that easily. Maybe one of the one's who's having it done more regularly could test.

I know one it's happening to, who isn't using Feedburner plugin, though.

This started happening to me too. Every other day or so the setting for "Users must be registered and logged in to comment" switched from unchecked to checked on its own.

I answered on the other thread, will repost here: Hasn't happened since I last wrote a month ago, but since there's trouble...I'm B-A-A-C-K!

Since I rarely get comments, I didn't notice they were closed until I saw Akismet was finding no spam. Even they can't get in. I suspect it's spam that is triggering this somehow.

Wait - I just checked and Alison is right:
    (1) Users must be registered and logged in to comment
    (2) An administrator must always approve the comment
were also checked, and I never ever check them. How could spam get in our admin?

Just like rjhayton, it takes a few weeks to start happening again, so it's very hard to test anything while waiting for several weeks. We're not testtube scientists!

I wonder if this is helpful: I also noticed that on my Dashboard, my widgets for WP Devt Blog and WP News said the feed wasn't working. Also, my Incoming Links feed is always broken - that's broken in all my blogs. It used to be great before WP upgraded, but now that widget is useless.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Any updates on this rjhayton?

    Try this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/extended-comment-options/

It is a plugin that lets you automatically update all your posts to turn comments on. Plus there is an "auto" option that apparently automatically keeps it that way. I like it, it's worked for me so far....

    OK, it happened again.

Even with this plugin in place: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/extended-comment-options/

The plugin told me that all comments are turned on. But I had to disable it then reenable it and batch turn them all on again. At least I didn't have to manually do all of that. So the plugin helps.

I've tried every which way and still every 2-4 weeks this keeps happening.

if i am not wrong those who are running Google
"Analytics 3 codes for WordPress" plugin , there is an issue with comments.
deactivating this plugin resolved the prob in my site.
(additionally i was unable to trash the comments)

    for others
