there was a plugin called category image that might be useful.

I don’t think that’s what he was going for. Afaik, there is no plugin for that.

I don’t the WP cookie would let you have a “new post” information. the best you could do is probably to change manually the image category manually to point out where there is a new post or change a list type (without using image) when a post inside a category is less than x days.
I think is not diffisult for a php coder…just check for every category if in the last 48 hours there is a post..if yes add the “new post” image
