Alt tags don't save when they start with a number

I’m having a problem getting changes to certain alt text tags in a gallery to stick. If I change the text, it reverts to the original. I narrowed it down to any tag which starts with a number. If I change it to sttart with a letter, it works fine.
Is this normal for alt tags or something to do with nextcellent?https://wordpress.org/plugins/nextcellent-gallery-nextgen-legacy/
