Allowing URL hacking with permalink (2 posts)

At the WordPress.org dev blog, hacking back the URL worked for the day and the month (listing all the posts in July for http://wordpress.org/development/archives/2004/07/, for example), but broke down for the year.
When I tried hacking back the URL to just the year,
    http://wordpress.org/development/archives/2004/
    I got this less-than-pretty note:
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/wordpres/public_html/development/index.php on line 10
Anyone know what's up? I want my WordPress site to allow people to hack back URL's to see stories in the archive. I know I can make my own redirect to a page linking to all the months, but if this functionality is there but just slightly broken I'm sure that would be better than anything I can do.
