All user defaulting to SuperAdmins

We have buddy press installed on two different sites within a multi-site set-up on word-press.

When any new user is generated in buddy press they default to super admins as it looks for the top level user and defaults to the topmost user rights. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? We don’t want users to have that much privilege.
