    I manually updated to 3.8.1
    Everything looked fine
Then 3 days later all theme pictures failed to appear and site looks strangely stripped of theme styling.

    It's here http://www.justastory.co.uk

screenies of dashboard view are here

New themes installed and tried don't make a difference. None of their pics and styling appear either.

Hi. It looks like the theme is referencing some Javascript, CSS and other files that are not available. Since these likely affect the layout of the site, I suspect that's the cause of the strange styling.

Some example URLs that are not found (404):

    http://www.justastory.co.uk/wp-content/themes/ridizain/js/functions.js?ver=1.0.09
    http://www.justastory.co.uk/wp-content/themes/ridizain/style.css?ver=3.8.1
    http://www.justastory.co.uk/wp-content/themes/ridizain/genericons/genericons.css?ver=1.0.09

Did you move or modify your theme directory as a part of the upgrade? You should check to make sure the "ridizain" theme directory has all of its needed files in it.

    Hi Chris

yes I tried to switch to another theme in an attempt to discover where the problem was.
However the problem first appeared just using the standard 2014 theme with no mods.
2014 is the active theme again now

I just ran a debug tool and some of the 2014 theme elements are returning a 404 - which I don't understand as it's a fresh install
    including the css
maybe I should just delete it and do a fresh theme install

After you switched the theme, I'm still seeing layout-related files being referenced that are not successfully being found on the server, e.g.

    http://www.justastory.co.uk/wp-content/themes/twentyfourteen/style.css?ver=3.8.1

You might need to re-install the theme directory and/or the WordPress software itself, to make sure you have all the files you need. If the style.css file is actually there on the server but still can't be viewed through the browser, it could be that you have an issue with "htaccess" rules or other server-side configurations.

I think maybe a reinstall could do the trick I will give it a try.
Just reinstalled the theme and that has made no difference so I think something more fundamental is a problem.
I am puzzled though as to why it looked fine just a couple of days ago and now has decided to look strange
I have other sites on the same server running 2014 which look fine.
Anyway I will check my htaccess also thank you for the suggestion,

I've just manually deleted http://www.justastory.co.uk/wp-content/themes/twentyfourteen/style.css?ver=3.8.1 and replaced, so it's not that
